Since the advent of European powers, Hausa societies have seen a magnitude of changes ranging from the costume of people to the overall socio-economic structure. One may also argue that Hausa oral singing tradition has been undergoing certain changes in its social meaning and context and that we can no longer interpret its role within the traditionally defined frameworks. An oral singer in contemporary Hausa societies does not perform only the roles that are imposed on him by his society. He is no longer unconscious of what he is doing in his poetry. He sees the world as it is reflected on his eyes and forms his own view about the world and expresses it in his own language. Like his predecessors, he represents traditional values already existing in his society. But he does not stay there. Unlike oral singers of the past he no longer react passively to the society. He often extols new ideas and urges people to make a wise choice between conflicting values. The rapid change of Hausa societies require and expect him to be an active and self-conscious poet.
