This study focuses on La farnilia de Pascual Duarte and La Colmena which constitute Camilo Jose Cela Trulock's major works. Camilo Jose Cela Trulock, who was born in La Cotuna of northern Galicia and died in 2002, is generally regarded as one of the best novelists in the 20th century produced from Spain. The main concerns of the paper are as follows. First, the paper illuminates how his works reflect Spain's historical and social situations at the time when they were written. Second, it investigates what makes violence, homicide, killing, and death become universal and generalized in his novels. Third, the paper examines that tragic and skeptical atmosphere felt in the characters of his novels is rooted from Spanish Civil War. It specifically indicates that war yields destruction, poverty, and despair and furthermore can completely annihilate humanity.
This work shows that a work left in the world as a writer's intellectual product and its literary, aesthetic, and social meaning and values represent the result of complicated and comprehensive intellectual thoughts regarding his contemporary society and reality, rather than the complacent intellectual pastimes of a prominent intellectual. In case of Cela, imagination as a writer, which is combined with his tragic and physical experience, i.e, his involvement with Spanish Civil War as a right-wing soldier and subsequent wound, affects the characters in his novels with negative and skeptical colors such as cynicism, doubt, disappointment, abandonment, and the loss of love. In conclusion, concrete themes dominating his works are the painting of Spain s tragic historic reality associated with the existence of human beings.
It cannot be denied that motives prevailing in Cela's novels are tragic reality resulting from Spanish Civil War and the historic and cultural environment before it. Consequently, the characters of his novels are not the results derived from his imagination but the fruits of acute anguish drawn from his own experience. Human beings face death as soon as they are born. They stand in the middle of cynicism and indifference. They suffer the frustration of existence as a social being. Cela, therefore, describes as tragic, painful, and gloomy all human beings' images. However, their intense struggle not to succumb to life permeates through his tragic images.
