Montale is a poet who experienced all changes and ideologies that surged in the Western society in the age of the 20th century. He questioned and meditated universal human concern on living sincerely and consistently. To him, truth was an enlightenment to the reality and essence of life. He wrote poetry as the only means to approach this truth. He demonstrated this spirit well in his first poetry book that encompassed poems written in 1920-1925 and was published in 1925.
In this poetry book, he described life as "false images full of void and emptiness." This is a meaningful enlightenment Hence, a poet endlessly agonizes and is in quest of something meaningful to make exodus from the reality. In these attempts, with rare frequencies, he experiences significant experiences, feels happy, and encounters miracle-like occasions. However, a poet realizes that all these things eventually are nothing but momentary, and that there are nothing like true, absolute happiness or perfect miracles. He eventually comes to accept that human beings cannot escape the reality, and feels powerless and is made to be silent in the face of the agonizing reality, like others. Therefore, a poet eagerly voices that one should not ask himself for advice and solutions on questions. Yet, he is never discouraged from facing the agonizing life and understanding its truth. Here, we can see Montale's human limit and greatness as a poet.
This poetics may be partly rooted in the early 20th century when social circumstances were turbulent. Hence, this poetics well demonstrates mental volatility and tension that greatly influenced most of cultures in the 20th century. Furthermore, this artistically depicts an intellectual's ethical and existential agonies against the fascism regime ever prevailing in Italy during the early and middle of the 20th century.
Centering on Montale's poems with this theme excellently demonstrated, the writer seeks to have in-depth and accurate understanding on his poetics epicenter of 'poetics of negation', as well as the whole poetry of his.
