The seon master Mangong is being famous as the deciple of seon master Kyongheo(鏡虛禪師) who rebuilt the Korean traditional patriarch seon(祖師禪) in the period of late Choseon and Japanese Colonialism. He composed three pieces of Buddist Gasa in Korean named 〈The seon master Mangong’s Chamseongog(滿空禪師參禪曲)〉, 〈The way of becoming monk in mountain (산에 들어가 중 되는 법)〉, 〈The way of practicing seon(참선을 배워 정진하는 법)〉. And he composed many pieces of Gatha(偈頌) in Chinese, and several essays in Korean. Also he gave dharma talking and dharma debate many times throughout his life. So the literary works that he composed are in existence very much because of his collection of literary works’s being, that is ?The seon master Mangong’s dharma talk(滿空法語)?. He carried out the movement of practicing traditional patriarch seon(祖師禪) by focusing on seon practicing and focusing on teaching his deciple and lay people, focusing on writing works about seon during his whole life. He showed the organic relationship in the dimension of the contents and the way of discoursing in his Buddhist Gasas and Buddhist essays. In order to find out the characteristics of his Buddhist Gasa, I started studying them with the method of analyzing his works, comparing his works and essays.
First, I found out the facts that the seon master Mangong's three Buddist Gasas - those are 〈The seon master Mangong’s Chamseongog〉, 〈The way of becoming monk in mountain〉, 〈The way of practicing seon〉 - are ranging from generality to tangibility. And I confirmed that the rule of definition and explanation are working in the seon master Mangong's three Buddist Gasa and his five pieces of essays. He explains many items about seon in his Buddhist essays which he can not inform to people in his Buddist Gasas. That means several definitions in his Buddist Gasas, the explanation of definition in his essays. So the relationships among his Buddist Gasas, between his Buddist Gasas and Buddist essays are pretty organic in the dimension of their contents.
Next, I researched the organic relationship in the dimension of the way of discoursing in his Buddhist Gasas and essays. The seon master Mangong used the way of discoursing, demanding people to hear about the seon, follow The prince Sildal(悉達太子) in 〈The seon master Mangong’s Chamseongog〉, sujestying the way of practicing seon in 〈The way of becoming monk in mountain〉, 〈The way of practicing seon〉. That’s why the seon master Mangong’s three Buddist Gasas have the organic relationship each other in the dimension of the way of discoursing. And he used the way of discoursing, explanation seon in detail in his five pieces of essays. His Buddist Gasas and essays have the organic relationship because he explains all main idea of his three Buddist Gasas in five essays.
I think the seon master Mangong’s three Buddist Gasas are important because those are showing us the change of the characteristics of the traditional Buddhist Gasa by giving up it’s function of lyricism. It could be the reason not to be composed Buddhist Gasa anymore after Mangong's three Buddist Gasas.
