In recent years, electrical reliability test specification including ESD(Electro-static Discharge) protection has been more strict as demand of automotive safety increases. A ceramic capacitor is generally used for ESD protection because of its low cost and stable performance. The capacity value and voltage rating are most important characteristics to implement an ESD protection circuit with a ceramic capacitor. Nevertheless, it has been designed based on experience of design engineer and experiments with trial and error method. In this paper, it provides proper capacity and voltage rating analysis to design protection circuit for various reliability requirements easily, and verify the result with an experiment. To do this, it analyze voltage characteristic of protection circuit with indefinite resistance load and capacitor using HBM(Human-Body Model). And we simulate the voltage and current with certain value using MATLAB, and it shows how to select the proper value of capacity and voltage rating. And it verifies its result based on the experiment result.
