Both energy price and energy consumption are important factors for explaining the economic growth, but there are few researches that consider these two factors simultaneously. It seems that these factors are negatively correlated and may cause multicollinearity problem. Using multi-level model, in this paper, we would analyze both the effect of oil price and oil consumption on Korean economy by industry level. Each industry has it's own oil consumption pattern and shows different growth trend under the effect of oil price.
This paper has some practical advantages. First, this paper employs the advanced multi-level model which enables us to analyze oil price and consumption simultaneously in one model. Second, we can show not only overall effect of oil price but compare the effect industry by industry. This result would give some important implications for both policy makers and industry participants. Finally, this model can be extended to other research topics, such as industry specific factors are important and different industry to industry.
