Overall, trade relations between the Republic of Korea and the European Union developed dynamically in the last years. However, among the still unresolved problems are the questions of anti dumping and subsidies, most notably in the case of Korean shipbuilding. Besides trade, more and more two issues determine bilateral economic relations: European investment grew considerably after the economic and financial crisis of 1997 and 1998. Recently, Korea tries to become a regional industrial, transportation, financial and services hub. Another issue linked to this is the changing regional economic structure, especially China's WTO membership, affecting locational strategies of firms. In this paper first a short overview of bilateral trade relations between Korea and the EU is given, including a discussion of some of the unresolved problems. Afterwards, the challenges for Korea's aim to become a regional hub are analysed, using empirical research in companies located in Korea with German and Austrian FDI. Finally, prospects of Northeast Asian regional integration and the effect on bilateral economic relations with the European Union are considered.
