As Beomjin Lee lost his power due to the radical change of political situation after Agwan pacheon, he departed for the US as the minister. He recorded his activitities in Misailrok. Even though Misailrok is a record of the short period from June 20, 1896 to January 31, 1897, some new facts were revealed from it. The activities of Beomjin Lee, the minister to the US, are as it follows.
Beomjin Lee departed Seoul on the board of a French warship with his wife and his son, whose name is Wijong Lee. There, he met Yeongik Min and Mollendorf. Although the general route to New York at the time crossed the US continent, Beomjin Lee crossed Canada and went through Montreal, Otawa, and New York, and then arrived at Washington. Regarding the areas he visited, Lee recorded the time-difference and fair, and it implies that he prepared in detail before his departure.
According to Misailrok, Beomjin Lee's activities as the minister was restricted. It is affirmed that the poor finance of the Korean Ambassy in Washington was the huge pressure for Beomjin Lee's diplomatic activities. Due to the characteristic of the diplomacy through banquet, the mutual diplomatic custom pressured him a lot. Due to the poor finance, Beomjin Lee felt pressured from attending the banquets hosted by the ministers of other countries, so he became passive in the amity among diplomats. Nontheless, he recorded the situations of the US that he experienced in Misailrok.
Beomjin Lee experienced in first hand the presidential election of 1896 which was the fiercest election ever. He described the political institutions and the development of the US, the meaning of Thanksgiving day and Christmas, and the cuisine of the US in detail. Beomjin Lee was encouraged by the development of the US after traveling New York and Washington. He thought that Chosun could keep her independence and develop herself like the US if she opened herself in one mind though Chosun was a small country.
Meanwhile, It was known that Beomjin Lee attended College of Jan-son de Lailly for 4 years from 1896 to 1900, but he had his son Wijong attend elementary school. Indeed, it is believed that Wijong, age of 10 in 1896, attended elementary school first and then advanced to college.
As seen above, Misailrok is a very useful text for watching the early diplomatic activities of Beomjin Lee, the situations of the US of the time, and his thoughts about the US.
