This article is concerned with the diplomatic activities of Yujong (1544-1610). who commanded monk-soldiers during the Imjin Waeran. After the war, he was dispatched to Japan as an envoy for scouting the enemy and conducted negotiations with the daimyo of Tsushima as well as with Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Against a backdrop of the restoration process of diplomatic relationship between Korea and Japan this article examines his diplomatic efforts.
First. Yujong delivered Tsushima the Korean court's willingness to allow trade. and in Kyoto met Tokugawa Ieyasu and confirmed his true intention toward peaceful relations. His diplomatic efforts provided a foundation for normalizing the relationship between the two countries. Thanks to Yujongs efforts, the Korean court was able to make the Tokugawa bakufu as its diplomatic partner away from Tsushima and proceed to a next stage for full diplomatic recovery.
Second, when he returned to Korea, Yujong brought 1,391 Korean war of prisoners back with him. Upon his request, the Tokugawa bakufu collected and repatriated 1,418 more war of prisoners back to Korea when the first embassy (called envoys for response and repatriation) of 1607 returned from Japan after its mission. The number of war of prisoners, who were repatriated through the endeavor of Yujong, reached about one third of the entire war of prisoners who returned to Korea.
Third, while staying in Japan for about eight months, Yujong was involved in the activities of cultural exchange with a wide range of Japanese people, including Buddhist monks, through the medium of Buddhism and Chinese poetry. His cultural activities set the precedent for cultural exchange that would fully be blossomed by Korean embassy members in later years.
