Japanese physical distribution industry is currently experiencing a turning point. The number of medium and small size retailers is declining as foreign-affiliated retailers are lining up to advance into the japanese market that is attracted by deregulations for foreigners. The current transfiguration in japanese physical distribution industry is forcing the local japanese retailers to be adapted to more than their traditional ways of doing business.
Deregulation and breaking down old japanese traditional business pattern has been a 30-year-old task for japanese physical distribution industry. Japanese physical distribution industry has steadily made deregulations providing solutions to the current situation. The conservative business pattern inherited from old japanese custom still persists delaying the changes that are required for today's market.
Thus, the research effort presented in this report will study the structures of japanese traditional physical distribution chain as well as the special characteristics involved with japanese traditional business pattern.
