In this writing we seek to clarify the cause of why decorum was considered important and how the family rituals were established within the scholar class of the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties from a social historical perspective. Accordingly, we sought to understand the correlation among the national policies, social needs and establishment of the family rituals of the era. As a result we found that decorum became important in the life of the scholar class because filial piety was considered an important virtue of evaluation in public elections since the Jin dynasty.
What is interesting is that the personal evaluation criteria of the time extended beyond mere compliance of the mourning dress code to all behaviors required of the gentlemen of the scholar class. This practice was closely linked to public elections. People of the era evaluated not only the mourning dress code but all behaviors that were considered required between human beings. Naturally, the scholar families were compelled to establish rational behavioral standards that are compliant of the decorum code follow the traditions of the era and suit their social positions and stature of their families.
A notable device created by the scholar class to propagate and educate the socially required daily decorum was the Letter of Formality. The Letter of Formality, which began to be compiled during the Jin era, became popular during the Southern and Northern Dynasties. It included not only the simple letter formats but all standards of etiquette and decorum to be practiced in a family, Thus, we see that the scholar class of the era sought to educate and propagate the daily decorum of simple and convenient forms through the Letter of Formality. The letters also reveal us the level of decorum practice in the life of the scholar class of the era.
