This study addresses the use of metalanguage expressions in informal discussions. The metalanguage expressions are divided into three categories: the expressions used in the introduction of a topic, the expressions used in decision making, and the expressions used in the progress of discussions. The analysis of these metalanguage expressions is based on the relationship of the participants and the number of utterances that were employed. The analysis shows that metalanguage expressions have characteristics in showing directions, the participants’ bond and thoughts. This study revealed when a moderator was absent, a discussion progressed rather dynamically. The leader of the discussion, who takes turns among the participants as discussion progresses, employs metalanguage expressions. The results also show that participants’ relationship such as age, school year and knowledge of the topics influences the use of metalanguage expressions.
