The music in the film Amadeus, directed by Milo? Forman in 1984 and adapted from Peter Shaffer's play, is not simply the background of the movie but an important dramatic device to illuminate the life of Mozart and his relationship to Salieri, Mozart's music, inserted into the film, enhances the development of the plot and contributes to the presentation of Mozart's life and the confrontation between Mozart and Salieri. Furthermore, the music helps to illuminate the relationship between God and man, and a genius and a mediocrity.
Salieri, who represents mediocrity, is jealous of the musical genius of Mozart and defies God, who has not given him artistic genius. His revenge against God is illuminated by his scheme to destroy Mozart. Salieri asks Mozart to compose a requiem mass and urges him to complete it immediately. The terrifying sounds of the Requiem, inserted around the death of Mozart, reveal God's judgement on all sinners and produce a horrifying atmosphere in the film.
