The text of 20:24-29 in the Gospel of John raises a few questions with regard to its correct translation, literary and hermeneutical issues. The present article deals with these issues in terms of literary and historical criticisms, i.e., textual criticism, narrative context, theological inquiry. The topic of transcendent experiences in religion has been given a new light recently as the historical positivism recedes. The present text reports the encounter of the transcendent reality, the resurrected Jesus, and subsequent struggles and convictions in the circle of the twelve disciples. In the case described the encounter of the resurrected Jesus fortunately induces faith in him among the disciples. But in the real world it does not always move that direction. In many cases, even though people experience the transcendent reality it is hard for them to have faith in God. The Scripture itself testifies that the disciples saw the risen Jesus, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. (Mt 28: 17)
In short, experiences themselves, whether they are mundane or transcendent, do not always lead people to faith. People seek experiences, especially spiritual and transcendent experiences, but faith does not come from the experiences. As the text reports, the sensuous experience certainly helped the twelve believe in Jesus. But the concluding remark of Jesus confirms that those who have not seen yet believed are blessed.
It means that faith can stand without sensuous experiences. Two factors, mental assent and trust, are essential to sound faith. The mental assent does not exclude the sensuous experiences. Instead, it goes beyond that. In the case of the trust, the object of the trust is the Lord. The subsequent history of Christianity witnesses the significance of right belief in terms of mental assent and wholistic trust in the Lord.
