Korea has experienced rapid economic development and industrialization, which become main forces of structuralizing urban form and life. In this process however human factors are ignored and is the concept of human scales. This phenomena is especially highlighted in the relationship between vehicles and pedestrians in an urban area.
In order to find out how people think and feel their pedestrian environment a survey was conducted in the Seoul metropolitan area. Three groups of urban areas are categorized and surveyed, which are new planned cities, old cities, urban-farm mixed cities. The result of the survey shows how inferior pedestrian environment is at present in every grouped city. Top three problems that hampers pedestrian environment indicated by surveyees turn out to be illegal parking on the pedestrian space, garbages on the streets, and scarce number of garbage can on the streets. These problems can be easily rectified with low financial expenditure compared with other urban and transportation project. Thus, positive concern and attention of related authorities matters to enhance pedestrian environment, which are lacked at present.
