Beginning in the Tang(唐) Dynasty through to the Five Dynasties(五代) period, the lyric Chinese poetry Ci(?) followed the tradition of the YueFu(?府) of the Han(?) Dynasty and developed into the Qu(曲) of the Yuan(元) Dynasty. It means Ci became a major vehicle for lyrical expression and Ci flourished as a very important, popular and sophisticated literary genre in Chinese literature. From this point of view, Ci will reveal itself by studying the ‘sound feelings(?情)’ of Ci as well as the literal contents of Ci.
LiuYong(柳永) is apparently regarded as the most important representative Ci writer in the Song(宋) Dynasty. LiuYong's YueZhangJi(『?章集』) shows that each ‘key of Ci(??)’ is associated with several ‘titles of Ci(?牌)’ and that they have something musical in common. The title of Ci may have nothing to do with its contents. Therefore, it is not easy to find out the relationship between the title of Ci and its contents. It is also not easy to find out the taxonomic basis of the sound feelings of Ci consistently. It may result from the subjective aesthetic sensibility of music.
Thus, this study aims to investigate what sound feelings can be found from what hierarchic structure and to explore to what extent which explanation can be possible by analysing specific Ci poems. To do this, this study regards three patterns of Ci as a multiple hierarchic structure, while also introducing the descriptions and comments of traditional critics. Three patterns of Ci are ‘phrase pattern(句式)’, ‘rhyme pattern(?式)’ and ‘key pattern(?式)’. Phrase pattern of Ci has length and ‘yin(吟)’ & ‘song(?)’ in phrase of Ci. Rhyme pattern of Ci has location and ‘ping(平)’ & ‘ze(仄)’ in rhyme of Ci. Key pattern of Ci has pitch and key in music of Ci. By selecting 10 Ci poems to analyse the sound feelings of LiuYong's Ci, this paper furthermore focuses on applying and verifying the suitability and usefulness of their musical literature consciousness.
