Theories of ci poem in Qing dynasty possess their own profound realistic and historic background: promotion to theory from creation, the influence of the politics and the culture, the effect of the cultural atmosphere, the evolution of theories of ci poem themselves, and their interaction with other theoretical forms as well, and so on.
Firstly, the prosperity of theories of ci poem has an immediate relation with the rejuvenation of ci poem in Qing dynasty with more than 200 thousand pieces and 10 thousand poets. Different poets' writing styles with their peculiar aesthetic pursuit are reflected in their theories. Therefore, the productivity of creation promotes the development of theories.
Secondly, since the domination of Qing rulers, they praise Confucian teachings and promote art by taking them as a fundamental national policy so as to win over those scholars of Han people. The supremacy's attitude leaves great effect on those poets' psychological state and the development of the ci poem's style, on the one hand, by pacifying and winning over the scholars with some means, and on the other hand, by cruelly suppressing and guarding them.
Thirdly, those ci poets' activities are active in the early period of Qing dynasty that lots of anthology of ci poems, commentaries and views are produced.
Fourthly, experts of ci poem in Qing dynasty draw much nutrition from theories of ci poem in Northern and Southern Song dynasties to promote and develop it, and then form a systematic theory. The theoretical propositions and the critical categories of ci poem in Song dynasty are both reflected in the study of ci poem in Qing dynasty, while studies of ci poem in Qing dynasty reflect upon the history development of ci poem studies in Tang and Song dynasty, such as the discussion on the development of ci poem in different stages and its different schools in Tang and Song dynasty, the selection of ci poet in Tang and Song dynasty, and the critiques to the anthologies of ci poem in Tang and Song dynasty, which are all the topics keen on by studies of ci poem in Qing dynasty. Fifthly, the prosperity of theories of ci poem is indivisible with that of literary theory as a whole in Qing dynasty, especially its relation with the poetic theory deserving more attention. The prosperity of ci poem studies in Qing dynasty promotes the development of ci poems, and accordingly these two sides supplement and complement each other.
