Japan has recently seen its industry hollow out due to the full-scale relocation of production points that was incurred by China’s entry into the WTO and its soaring economic growth. Unlike the previous hollowing out that was caused by a high yen, the problem is said to be unique this time in the sense that China has been standing out in the world market and it helps expose Japan’s structural vulnerabilities in industry. Some businesses and the overall industrial sector have pointed out that the situation is out of control, given that it is attributed to a weakening competitiveness in the manufacturing sector, a sign that the hollowingout is quite a serious problem.
Meanwhile, Japan has given priority to maintaining and strengthening its industrial competitiveness by making the manufacturing industry high value-added and improving the environment. In other words, it is strategically checking China by fully utilizing its advantages and at the same time, creating an infrastructure for constant economic growth based on the manufacturing sector.
It is true that Korea also sees a growing possibility for industrial hollowing out; therefore it must arrange careful and thorough countermeasures. As for the rapid emergence of the Chinese economy, more Korean companies are expected to leave their country. This makes it necessary to build a social security net to minimize any side effects from such an occurrence. There is also a need for improvements to the environment for business and investment in order to induce more foreign companies.
