The 'Durban Chinese' is the descendant of earlier Chinese immigrants who came to South Africa at the beginning of 20th century. The 'Durban Chinese' therefore connotes that the present members of this community were 'born and bred' in Durban. They are the people of holding South African citizenship and largely assimilated into the dominant South African white population.
The 'Durban Chinese' themselves identify themselves as "beloning to nowhere... and stand on the cross-road". They have largely forgotten their vernaculars and socio-cultural habitat of China. Although their physical looks are Chinese and maintain some Chinese identities, such as, family name system, they are generally getting out of Chinese identities.
To prove this 'vanishing identities', I have examined the 'Durban Chinese's family systems and marriage patterns, through which I am able to analyse the 'Durban Chinese'. Traditionally, a Chinese family system is an extended family and the question is whether this traditional family system could be developed and persist, as it did in some overseas Chinese communities. Marriage pattern of the 'Durban Chinese' also shows that as a generation comes down, the endogamic marriage pattern has changed into exogamic pattern. Compare to 1/2 generation who searched their marriage partners in China, 3/4 generations are free of finding out their marriage partner, particularly whites are preferable. This gives an important clue of understanding the 'Durban Chinese's ethnic identity.
