The effect of different seed presowing treatments on the germination of Senna grandis L. f. and Senna spectabilis DC were studied in Morogoro, Tanzania. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Six presowing treatments were applied:⑴ overnight soaking in cold water, ⑵ overnight soaking in water heated to 60C, ⑶overnight soaking in water heated to 90C, ⑷ partial removal of the seed coat at the radicle end, ⑸complete removal of the seed coat and ⑹control for both species. For S. grandis, partial removal of the seed coat at the radicle end attained significant (p<0.05) cumulative germination of 54% while the complete germination period was 4 days. For S. spectabilis, overnight soaking in water heated to 90C ranked first with cumulative germination of 44.25% but was not significantly (p>0.05) different to partial removal of the seed coat at the radicle end which scored 40.5%. The complete germination period for both seeds soaked in water heated to 90C and for seeds that underwent partial removal of the seed coat at the radicle end was 3 days. Other treatments gave low germination values or did not germinate completely. Generally the germination was low in both species and hence calls for further investigation of other factors contributing to poor germination. We also strongly suggest that similar experiments be carried out in the nursery and perhaps field to give out solid conclusions.
