The object of this essay is to study the historical development of korean Shen-shun thoughts and its cultural characteristcs. And this essay aimes at to understand korean culture more deeply by way of investigating the influence of Shen-shun thoughts on koran culture.
In early times there was an special cultural elements in korea. Those elements are as follows; the attitude of naturalism, humanist tradition, respect of life etc. Those elements may have a greate affinity for Shen-shun thoughts. But we cannot tell whether there formed an native Shen-shun thought in korean early times or not. But in Three dynasty Period Chinese Shen-shun thoughts were introduced to korean Peninsula. We can find many documents and remains about Shen-shun thoughts. In Koryo dynasty Shen-shun thoughts were used as meaningful subjects in poetries and essays.
In Chosun dynasty Neo - confucian scholars discussed the rational adequacy of Shen-shun thoughts. This promoted taoist intellectuals to development philosophical theory and practical methods. In Chosun dynasty we can find three main streams related to Shen-shun thoughts. Firstly the school of Danhak (Danhak means the thought of internal alchemy) endeavored to attain enlightenment and immortality through taoist practice. Secondly interests to nourishing life were widely spread in confucian scholars and oriental medical doctors. Concretely speaking physical health and spiritual peace, effective methods of breathing, taoist gymnastics were studied widely. Thirdly many korea traditional poetries, novels and essays were influenced by Shen-shun thoughts. By examining synthetically the relation of Shen-shun thoughts and koran culture we can conclude that Shen-shun thoughts are rooted in deep consciousness in korean people. It is important to understand rightly Shen-shun thoughts in investigate deeply korean thoughts, or korean culture.
