The legend of Shun’s murder by Gu Sou and Xiang is an very important legend in the pre-Qin period, so a study of the historical and cultural information that this legend contains helps us get to know times Shun lived in. This paper studies Shun’s legend form the perspective of marriage system and finds out that Shun’s persecution was a trail from Gao Xin in matriarchal pairing marriage times. Marriage of matriarchal times had experienced group marriage and pairing marriage these two stages. Pairing marriage occurred in the late of matriarchal times and male and female had a relatively stable partner then. Usually a man lived in the woman’s house. At that time, people started to be picky about choosing a spouse. Especially the tribe female leaders, they not only chose a husband, but also a male leader and a military commander of the tribe in the future. If excellent men want to get married with female tribe leaders, they need to go through severe trials, sometimes even under the risk of death. Shun’s persecution belongs to this kind of trial.
