Television programs have been criticized for being filled with images showing excessively affluent possessions and lifestyles. In this regard, this study explored if individuals’ frequent upward comparisons with people on television may culminate in decreases in life satisfaction, employing different aspects of social comparisons such as upward and downward comparisons as well as comparisons with people on television and comparisons with people individuals can meet in their everyday life. Surveys were administered to 405 adults, showing that among the diverse comparisons, only upward comparisons with people on television was found to be an important factor affecting life satisfaction, with the impact being negative. Additionally, the data showed that among many television genres, entertainment program viewing was found to be a significant factor providing frequent experiences of upward comparisons. The finding of this study suggest that the mediated reality on television may be more powerful than unmediated reality could be in constructing perceptions of life quality among individuals. The findings also suggest that downward comparisons with people on television may not cultivate positive perceptions of life quality, whereas upward comparisons with people on television may culminate in negative impact on perceptions of life quality.
