Modern critics in the non-western periphery tried to assimilate their point of view to that of western core country. Especially many critics in modern Korea also followed the intellectual fashion of the western country through the Japan. To many Korean intellectual and critic, Tokyo is the window for the West. They tried to read the literary journal published by Japanese miters as soon as possible and adopt it to Korean literature. Therefore, the intellectual atmosphere of Korean literature is dominated by colonialism.
The famous Korean literary critic, Ahn Ham-Kwang(l910-1982) resisted to this colonial trend. He criticised the proletarian criticism that follows that of Japanese proletarian discourse. Main stream of Korean proletarian literature recognized that the condition of Korea is very similar with Japan or the Soviet Russia. They did not know the difference between the condition of Korean working class and that of Japan or Soviet Russia So that Ahn Ham-Kwang points that Korean proletarian literature is based on the peasants considering the global capitalism. He also did not accept the artistic method of socialist realism because it is originated from the reality of Soviet Russia He emphasized the specificity of Korean proletarian literature. Because of this viewpoint, he is blamed as nationalist from the inner circle of proletarian literature.
In the period of post-independence he assert the idea of national literature. National literature is based on the emphasis of national question. He thought that Korean peninsula was under the neo-colonialism, While North Korea is under the influence of Soviet Russia, South Korea is under the influence of U.S. Criticising the ethnocentrism, he points the importance of self- determination of periphery country.
Ahn Ham-Kwang blamed the ethnocentrism and abstract socialism in the Korean literary criticism. He always consider the uneven development of capitalism and the natoinal question. Therefore he is a rare man of decolonized mind.
