During the century following the coming of the Benedictine Order to Korea in 1909 four Abbeys have been established. The time when these Abbeys existed do quite naturally constitute the various epochs of Benedictine history in Korea: Baekdong Abbey (1909~1927), Tokwon Abbey (1927~1949), Yeonkil Abbey (1922~1946) and Waegwan Abbey (1952~up to the present). The history of Waegwan Abbey, lasting 57 years, is the longest epoch in these 100 years of Benedictine history in Korea.
This paper deals in a concise form with the 57 years of Waegwan Abbey. It is in accordance with the intention of the Symposium to commemorate the centenary of the Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien in Korea. The two papers to be presented right before this paper dealt with the time before and after the year 1949 during which Tokwon Abbey was dissolved.
The Major Superior in the Benedictine Order holds a peculiar office and authority. Also at the present moment the tenure of the Abbot of Waegwan Abbey is indefinite. When describing Benedictine history the role and the activities of the Abbot cannot be left out. However, this paper has not been written centering on the Abbots. Instead the development of the monastery as an institution, the Vicariate Forane of Waegwan and Special Pastoral Work are the three major themes around which the paper is written. Among these three the section on Special Pastoral Work is deliberately presented in a brief way.
For the author the two central themes are Monastic Life and Missionary Activities, but he did not put the emphasis on the result of Missionary Activities but rather on the process of how the monastery developed as an institution. Here is where the foundation of missionary activities can be found. In this way it is possible to better understand the interconnection which exists between the goal and the special quality of the activities.
The history of the Benedictine Order in Korea is an important part of Korean Church history. Waegwan Abbey who is the only of the four Abbeys still existing after these 100 years should carry on this historical heritage in a more responsible manner. The Abbey should strive more thoroughly for a balance of Monastic Life and Missionary Activity. Actually, both are one. Prayer and Work are the two pillars of Benedictine Life. In the future Waegwan Abbey has to develop in a harmonious way the "twofold vocation" of the Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien, namely to be both a monk and a missionary.
