Busan had been the city related most deeply to Japan during five hundred years of Chosun. Since seventeenth-century, it had been only city by which Chosun traded with Japan, because Japan town(Waegwan, 倭館) was located in Busan. It was the first battlefield and a main strategic point of Japanese army in 1592. In the background of the peaceful diplomatic relations with Japan, there were misgivings about Japanese Invasion of 1592(Imjinwaeran, 壬辰倭亂). Busan has many cultural relics related to Japan because of its location and characteristic. It had played dual roles as a defensive point and a exchange post in late Chosun. These contradictory roles reflects on the cultural relics related Japan of Busan in our time. The cultural relics related Japan of Busan are mainly the ones from Japanese Invasion of 1592. To the contrary, the peaceful relics related to Waegwan and Tongshinsa(通信使) have survived scarcely. This contrast serves as an obstacle to the balanced views on Japan. It is very necessary to make efforts to use easily and commercialize the cultural relics related Japan from the balanced views. Each region strives actively to develop a regional studies which search for a regional identity recently. Year 2007 is the monumental year in history of exchange between Korea and Chosun, as it will become sexcentenary of the establishment of Waegwan in Busan, and quatercenteanry of the establishment of Waegwan in Dumopo(豆毛浦). To meet it, we expect the epoch-making development of the history of exchange between Korea and Japan as well as the studies in Busan.
