The purpose of this studt is tto examine the trends and types of homicide, characters snd perceptions of murderers, and criminological traits of homocide incidents. Murder is the public issue that our society must take the responsibility of together. So we must understand the mental state of murderers, and take systematic intervention to the dangerous men.
This study was performed by using the methods of ①examining official statistics published by the Supreme Public Prosecutor´s Office, ②analyzing the criminal records and the questionnaire of murderers in the correctional institution, ③ analyzing the interview data of murderers in the correctional institution.
1. General Traits of Murders
The number of murders in Korea has increased for the last ten years. The rate of mal offender is far higher than the rate of the female offender, and the majority of the murderers are the thirties, single-handed offenders. The majority of the victims are male, the thirties and families of murderers.
There are many cases that have the violence or argument in progress, and the violence or argument is the victim precipitated incidents or mutual precipitated incidents in many cases. The the majority of weapons are knives or sharp tools, the offenders used those directly without other actions.
The mass murderers are faced with difficulty because of economy or emotion reason. And they have introspective nature, so they cannot solve their stress with rational way.
The spree Killings are similar to the mass murder in many points, except for locomotion of criminal action.
The serial murders can be classified with 'hedonistic motive type', 'gaining type', 'angeres type' and so on.
The serial murderers in 'hedonistic motive type' cannot feel sympathy with victims, so they take victims as a means to an pleasure. They have the careful plan, choose the weak as target. And their actions have evolved in skill, intensity of violence, etc.
The serial murders in 'gaining type' can be classified with 'robbery murder' and 'crime suppression', so their basic traits are similar to robbery or other crimes. But the intensity of violence in serial murder is higher than robbery or other crimes, they are repeated.
The serial murders in 'angeres type' can be designate as the repeated ordinary homicide.
3. The Killings the Lineal Ascendant or Descendant
There are more single-handed offenders than multi-handed offenders, especially the most of the descendant killers are single-handed. The Killings ascendant happen accidentally. The rate of the twenties in the ascendant killers, and the thirties in the descendant killers is high relatively. The ascendant killers live with their parents usually, but they are in discord within the family. And the many ascendant killers are maltreated by their parents. The majority of the victims of the Killings ascendant are the over-forties.
4. The Murders by Women
The majority of the female murderers are the over thirties, the married, the under-educateds, the jobless, the first offense. The majority of victims by the female murderers are male, the over fifties. The most of female murders chose the acquaintances as victims
There are many murders by the female offender that have the violence or argument in progress, and those are curses or insults. The cause of death of victims are suffocation or damage of the internal organs.
5. Suggestion
The preventable counterplans to homicide are ①establishment of media guideline on violent crimes and monitoring, ②opening face and career of murderer to the public, ③operation of the safeguard for victims' families, ④social education for rational communication and anger management, ⑤considering to socialeconomic minorities, ⑥supporting social adaptation of delinquent youth.
The counterplans to multi-murders are ①sharing information of victims within investigation authorities, ②activating forensic science, ③encouraging environment for systematic research on homicide, ④arrangement of connection devices that link correction policy and probation policy.
The preventable counterplans to killings the lineal ascendant or descendant is establishing effective measures for reducing family violence and maltreatment. And the counterplans to murders by women is considering for practical problem solution of female.
