About in the fall of 1524, Giulio Romano let Marcantonio engrave sixteen lecherous drawings, which described the loving scenes between man and woman nakedly and would be later known as I Modi. Pope Clemens VII who heard about or saw those prints prohibited the sale of them and confiscated all remaining copies. Worse than all, Marcantonio was even imprisoned. A little later Pietro Aretino, inspired by those drawings, added his sonnet on each scene. His poems combined with Giulio's drawings were published later under the title of the Sonetti lussuriosi, and the most remarkable erotica in the Renaissance was born. Until now the course of these episodes, however, has remained uncertain because of the lack of sources and the ambiguity of evidences. Sometimes revising common opinions, here I am trying to give a full account of the circumstances around those episodes. My conclusive points are: Giulio Romano left Rome for Mantua in early October in 1524; therefore making prints by Marcantonio was done about in the early spring of 1525; Pope Clemens took strong measures because the prints were found in church and even in the square; Giberti did not punish Giulio because he was supported by the powerful evangelists; Aretino made a surprise attack against Giberti at the Pasquinades in April in 1525 because of Giberti's such a rigorous measure as the imprisonment of Marcantonio; Aretino wrote his lecherous sonnets about between the summer of 1526 and early 1527, but poetic sentiment itself could be already inspired between February and April in 1525; Arriving at Venice in the spring of 1527, Aretino immediately tried to print his Sonetti lussuriosi; the so-called Toscanini edition, the only remaining copy of the Sonetti lussuriosi, would be one of the numorous variants of Aretino's original.
