This research does not focus on the exhibition of a common concept but pays attention to the Fisheries Development Exhibition that was held in Pohang, a small city in Gyeongsangbuk-do in Chosun under the Japanese colonization.
In 1935, Gyeongsangbuk-do Fisheries Development Exhibition was held as a specialized exhibition of one single industry division, fishery product, in the beach of a remote region, Pohang. It has the quality that it is a ‘regional and specialized (fisheries industry)' exhibition that is differentiated from a ‘central and comprehensive' exhibition.
The main subject of examination of this research is the exhibition classified by industry that is away from the former researches, especially the fishery product exhibition. The fisheries industry is directly related to the life of fishermen and fishing villages of the near seas, and has a big meaning in the aspect of the empire's acquisition of a fishing ground and exploitation. Through this research I could understand not only the exhibition itself but also the trend of the fisheries industry that took place concretely in Yeongil Bay, a lower unit.
In 1935, when the exhibition was held, in what situation were the Chosun Dynasty's ‘marine products' and ‘development'?
At that time, the movement of working out one's salvation by one's own efforts of the Japanese Government-General of Chosun was started along the right lines, and the ‘fisheries development movement' of the sea area of Yeongil Bay was lively developed in the atmosphere of the times of ‘the farming, mountain and fishing villages development program'. In addition it was a point of time when an industrial countermeasure about the rapidly-increasing demand for fishery product away from the primary fishery product processing was demanded.
With this background the Gyeongbuk Fisheries Development Exhibition was prepared centering on the clique such as NakayaDakesaburo(中谷竹三郞) that dominated the regional fisheries industry of the times and was selected as the winner. The prizes were mostly edible herrings and mackerels and inedible anchovy oil and fertilizer, and put a big weight on manufacturing canned goods and so on. I could grasp the trend of fisheries industry of Chosun that faced exploitation as the supply base of war materials through the regional society.
