The following conclusions deduced from the data of 1,553 injured persons who visited first aid center located in ski resort in Kangwon province during every ski season from 2004 to 2008. The total number of skiers during those season was 3,293,234.
First, the number of lower limbs was 884(56.9%), this number divided by female(29.2%, n=453) and male(27.8%, n=431). The most frequently injured area was knee joint(55.3%, n=489), hip and lower leg were followed. Second, the injury of upper limbs(17.2%, n=267) was the most frequently cited ski injury.
Among the patients of upper limbs injury, the male comprised of 10.1%(n=157) and female comprised 7.1%(n=110). Third, the number of trunk was 402(25.9%), this number divided by female(15.3%, n=238) and male(10.6%, n=164). The most frequently injured area was skull(44.5%, n=179), face and vertebral and chest were followed. Fourth, the general types of injury were sprain and ligament injury(33.6%, n=522), contusion(26.7%, n=415), Fracture(13.7%, n=212), skull shock(11.5%, n=179), laceration(8.2%, n=127) in order. In order to prevent ski injury, both skier and ski slope operator's responsibility were discussed in this study. This study insisted that ski resort operator need to hire accredited instructor and guard and skier need to be ready for the season by conditioning the body fitness particularly reinforcing the knee flex muscles along with proper equipment usage and attainment of basic ski skill prior to skiing. Besides, this study suggested that a comprehensive measure to prevent ski injury need to be prepared and ski resort should not be congested all the time.
