In the 1970s and 1980s, the literature of the working class and their literary clubs were one of the most important intellectual activities of working class people. They contributed to improving their reading and writing skills, and they formed their own ‘intelligent gatherings’ that was not only significant to them but also to the history of Korean literature. But these literary aspects disappeared in the 1990s as suddenly as they had quickly developed. The rise and decay of working class literature was a radical phenomenon that occurred in a peculiar historical context. In large extent it influenced the characteristics of Korean literature, culture, and labor. In the 1990s, the people’s literature and its theoretic basis vanished as society became more democratic even though it had suffered censorship and suppression during Park’s dictatorship. It is time to restore the discourses of working class literature and its literary clubs.
