Cho Bong-Am is considered to be one of the most dramatic political figures in the modern Korean history. As he changed his political stance in political turbulent times and was executed by his political rival, however, his profound theoretical argument and his supremacy involved with practices have not been deeply reflected to korean politics yet. He tried to pursue the policy of mean and put an emphasis on compromises between the ideal and the reality. His tragedy represents the dark side of the modern korean history which was incapable to embrace the leader who tried to make political ideals possible into reality. Cho's political line can be designated as the third way because his theory is to be a symbiosis of democracy, social market economy, and unification without military conflict. He tried to ameliorate the conflicts between the left and the right, between separation and unification, and between reality and ideal. Under the collapse of communism, the uprise of the third way and social democracy in Europe, and reconciliation between South and North Korea, it is under utter practical necessity that Cho's political way be reassessed. Jinbo Dang was the first Korean legalized political party which, with the support of the significant number of voters, tried to establish the third way from capitalism of South Korea and communism of North Korea. Critical evaluations of Jinbo Dang's uprise and collapse and inner mechanism of it give ramifications to current progressive political parties. Reassessment of Cho Bong-Am and Jinbo Dang is not an issue regarding the past, but a critical analysis of alternatives for today and the future.
