This study is to analyze the problems of political parties in Thailand. With the consideration of the particular political environments and factors influencing upon on the political parties in Thailand, the problems are as follows:First, Most political parties were subordinated to a powerful leader in consequence of continuing authoritarian regimes.
Second, the linkage between political leaders and the general public was loosened as all political parties were formed centering around a handful of power political leaders.
Third, political parties have consisted of diverse political groupings with heterogeneous memberships. Their organizational structure has been weak, fragmented, and undisciplined. They have aggregated a loose conglomeration of individuals, cliques, and factions, rather than organized or semi‐organized interest groups upholding some common policy goals or program.
Fourth, the functions of political parties were not based on their own policies or ideologies, but influenced by self‐interest oriented will of political leaders.
Fifth, The general characteristics for traditional political culture closely related to the development of political parties as before today as follows: authoritarianism, social character of power‐oriented, and collectivism Now, Thailand is experiencing the political change from the political regime’s transformation and also a lot of restraints for the development pd political parties. Therefore, whether the establishment and accomplishment of the institutionalization will succeed or not depends primarily on how the problems of political party and restraints can be overcome in the future.
