Meiji Japan transformed itself from a premodern society to a modem one by adopting Western civilization. One of the factors that helped Japan's transformation was the introduction of Western knowledge through translation and publishing of Western books. In particular, this article focus on the introduction of the knowledge of Western history which left deep influence not only on academia but also on society in general.
This article emphasizes three aspects about the subject. Firstly, early Meiji Japan's introduction to Western history was not limited to the history of Western civilization. Meiji Japan published a numerous number of the history of Western revolution. Secondly, Western history books introduced to early Meiji Japan included strong political elements, often accompanying fierce political controversies. Thirdly, those political controversies concerning Western history, especially the French Revolution, had a close relationship with Japan's efforts to build a new political system which culminated in the form of the Meiji Constitutional System.
In all, early Meiji Japan's interpretation of the history of the French Revolution had far-reaching political and social ramifications beyond the issue of gaining historical knowledge.
