Turgenev's second novel, A Nest of Gentry has attracted many scholars, because it contains many musical subjects, various names of the composer and musical genres. Critics have studied the characterizing function of the music in the novel. Some of them maintain that music influences in forming and changing of the characters of the protagonist, while others think that it functions as the indicators of moral values of the protagonists.
This study attempts to examine the function of music in characterizing main protagonists in the novel, finding that the music seldom influences in the character building of the protagonists, but it carries out the function of revealing the characteristics, and the moral values of the main characters. This study also examines the devices of revealing the characteristics of the two characters group, the first one with Lisa, Lavreckij, and Lemm, and the second one with Varvara, and Panshin, finding that Turgenev uses the verses or epithets in the musical works composed by Lemm and Panshin to hint Lisa's mental characteristics, uses musical songs loved by characters to reveal their moral state, and also uses the inter-textual meaning of musical works of the contemporary composers to hint moral and psychological state of characters, and even makes the music as personified living thing to express the joyfulness of the main characters.
This study also finds out that 'the seriousness дельность‘, becomes the main criteria distinguishing the two groups, maintaining that only the characters of the first group who understand what is true love and life can understand what is the true music. This study sees that this Turgenev's theme of music and love delineated with poetic beauty in this novel have a universality, which have made the novel so popular.
