This study tries to find out the meaning of the poetic world made by the song of Yakov in Turgenev’s 《The Singers』, in which the meanings of the two completely contrasted spaces, the small village of Kolotovka and the pub of Pritynnyj kabak, play great role in making of thematic construction.
Turgenev not only gives the overt image of the beating to the first space by using the names of village, Kolotova, and of the former owner of the village, Stryganikha, but also makes direct image of peace and shelter to the second space by giving the name of ‘Pritynnyi.’ He gives direct description of the bleak village, thus the strengthens the negative image of the first space. A song-contest held in the pub makes a world of childhood for the village people. In order to lessen the big image gap between two spaces, Turgenev gives some characters comic names, giving the story somewhat fairy-tale mood.
This article finds out that the song sung by Yakov during the song-contest makes the sense of childhood among the people, making them to conform their feeling to the artistic world made by Yakov’s song, in which Turgenev hints that Yakov, just like ‘a large white seagull’ tries to greet the familiar sea, and have the vision of the new world, where ‘the true burning Russian soul’ governs. The song conveys the impression of this vision not only to the narrator of this story but to the audience in the song-contest, giving them delightful mood.
After the narrator leaves the pub which symbolizes the peace and shelter, he again experiences the unpleasant mood right away, and understand that the bleak village and the image of beating still exists, when he sees one boy calling his brother’s name ‘Antropka’ and saying that the father wants to beat him. This article suggests that even though the narrator realizes with sad mood that the beating still exists in the village, he gives a little hint that even though the human being symbolized by the internal meaning of ‘Antropka’ is still in the threat of beating, he will not be suppressed eventually by the beating, because he stands ‘as though in another world.’
This article maintains that Turgenev suggests that the art made of ‘the burning true Russian soul’ could make the people see the vision of new world, and the human being never be under the power of beating, making a covert charge against the serfdom with the device of insinuation.
