The 50th "dan" (the 50) of Tsurezuregusa deals with ghost rumor which disturbed the society in Otyo era and following prevalence of pestilence. Kenko tells ghost rumor using narrative space which is the most suitable for the appearance of ghost. Kenco is aimed at criticizing group mind staggered by a groundless rumor at first glance. But on second thought there is an another hidden message that is not told by the author. Behind the ghost rumor there is a popularity of Dengaku. Not only popularity of Dengaku but also prevalence of pestilence and ghost rumor of Otyo era are depicted exquisitely. Criticism over the reality is reflected in Kenco's intention to tell the ghost story of the 50th "dan". By not telling the fact as it is, the 50th "dan" can be a more implicative than otherwise.
In conclusion, the 50th "dan" should be understood as a dual structure which, on one hand, tells the ghost rumor in narrative form and on the other hand shows the author's keen observation of the times.
