The purpose of this study is to clear the image of "witches" in Japanese modern literature. The chapter1 is 'were there any "witches" in Japan?' I picked up Mori Ogai's "Seinen" and made an analysis of the image of "witches", there is the image of "witches" from fairy tales. There were some translations of fairy tales of Brothers Grimm from 1887. On the one hand "witch" is the word to be emblematic of a woman in this story.
The chapter2 is 'a "witch" in Sato Haruo's works'. I picked up Sato Haruo's "Sairen" and made an analysis of the image of "witches",too. The image of "witches" in these two works have in common, "Witches" in those two works are swingeres and they have many men under a spell.
I picked up those common points and tried to compare those image of "witch" with "doku-fu" at the chapter3 'the conditions of "witch". "doku-fu" was an archetype of wicked woman in Japan of those days. Particularly, around 1980, there was a boom of stories about "doku-fu", But "witches" in "Seinen" and "Sairen" were very different of "doku-fu". "Doku-fu" play the complete villains and they are called "doku-fu" because they desire for wealth so much. On the contrary, we can't deside if "witches" are villains or not. They are called "witches" just because they are honest with their sensual desire.
At the last I picked up Kunikida Doppo's "Kamakura-fujin". It included really important problem to be connected with the conditions of "dokufu" and "witches". "Witches" in Japanese modern literature were an archetype of new wicked woman of those days.
