『Arilang』's background times range from Dong Hak peasantry's revolution to 8.15 independence. Its spatial background spreads out from Kimje and Kunsan to Manchuria, Mokpo, the Maritime Province of Siberia, Hawaii, the Japanese islands, and South-East Asia.
This paper analyzes 『Arilang』 by means of 'The Structure of desire' written by Jacques Lacan. The Hole built by the other pursues phallus and practices filling up the hole for itself. But the hole filled up makes another hole and the hole slides down pursuing another type of phallus. The consciousness of the writer is found through the repeating of this process.
『Arilang』, has holes built by making patriot martyrs for national independence, peasant proprietors, women plundered, Hawaii settlers and the pro-Japanese group become others. These holes pursue phallus respectively. These holes ,in tum, overcome loss by practicing filling up. But the holes filled up generate other holes, and the holes pursue other phalluses.
According to the analysis consequence by 'the Structure of desire', the consciousness of the writer is as follows which is presented by major characters of Arilang.
First, independence movement generates from the views of nationalism but gradually, it is processed by 'patriots for national independence' with a variety of Ideologies. But independence is accomplished by foreign influence with the variety of Ideologies separated. After all, national conflicts deepen further, and lead to the tragic division of Korean peninsula.
Second, passive resistance of peasant proprietors causes them to last their wandering lives without overcoming the circumstance of the colonial era.
Third, the plundered women are divided into passive women and positive women in the consciousness of the writer. The passive women fail to get over the sufferings. But the positive women get over the sufferings pursuing another desire. Consequently, the writer suggests that the positive life is more desirable than the passive life for the women.
Fourth, Hawaii settlers emigrates to get over poverty. They overcomes their hardships there, and they tum to being pursuing independence by the influence of the patriots for national independence. The writer hereby suggests that the settlers' will for getting over hardships leads to the national consciousness.
Fifth, the pro-Japanese group collaborates with Japanese imperialism because of a sense of inferiority from their low social status and pursues the wealth and the power. But the writer suggest that they are only foolish being put to use by Japanese imperialism.
Hereafter, on the basis of the consciousness of the writer presented in 『Arilang』, by extension, in 『Taebaeksanmek』 and 『Hangang』, contemplating narrative aesthetics of Korean modern-contemporary history will be the problem to be solved.
