The purpose of this study is to provide a general survey of the tradition of the Arabic rhetoric as a flesh and blood of the Arabic sciences. Even if the origin of the Arabic rhetoric was linked to the poetic criticism in the early times before Islam and developed greatly thanks to the Arabic grammarians and the muslim literary critics until the middle ages of Islam, it has become clear that the Arabic rhetoric has developEd mainly in the context of Islamic environment. Many Islamic sects in the early Islamic period have raised many theological questions and contributed to making the theological theory, thus developing the science of Arabic rhetoric along with the development of Koran exegesis(tafsir).
While Islam was the basis of Arabic culture, the Arabic rhetoric 'ilm aI-baiagha was in its own way representative of Islam. The muslim belongs to a community that has been motivated by revelation, and the structures of Islamic thought have been molded according to this basic fact. Thus, the Arabic rhetoric provides the muslim believer with an ideal model for reading revelation.
The fact that it is hard to find studies on the oratory and preaching in the Arabic rhetoric might suggest that it does not represent a level achievement in content or form and another possible perception among the Arabs is that the aI-khat?ba which is "Greek rhetoric" belongoo to the tradition of philosophy and therefore is not representative of Islam. This may lead to the conclusion that al-khat?ba was foreign to Islam. But this topic whether the tradition of Arabic rhetoric was influenced by the Greek sources should be dealt with in a separate follow-up research in the future.
