Kwanmo of the Koguryo period is well described in history books and mural paintings in ancient tombs compared with that of other kingdoms. Furthermore, recent archaeological achievements have made it possible to guess its shape. However, in spite of plenty of materials about it. only a few of them describe it in detail. Therefore, it is still difficult to pinpoint the distinguishing characteristics of Koguryo Kwanmo.
One of prestige goods, Kwanmo well reflects the power and social conditions of a nation. In the early Koguryo period, people wore Chinese Kwanmo due to the influence of Han Chinese commanderies. However, as the Koguryo dynasty gradually secured its power and developed a well organized governing system, Koguryo Kwanmo developed differently from that of China. Initially people wore two Kwanmos with different shape, Chaek and Jeolpung, according to their social status. As Koguryo developed its own governing system, Kwanmos made of metals began to appear.
Beginning in the fourth century, Kogurvo pushed ahead with territorial expansion abroad while completing centralization at home through unifying bureaucratic system, changing the way to employ officials, improving procedures to perform rites, raising the title of king, and paying more respect to the late kings. It is assumed that the monarchs of Koguryo began to wear gold crowns as they used the title Taewang, meaning "Great king". The excavation of various gilt-bronze headdresses shows that Kwanmos made of metals were more widely worn than fabric ones in Koguryo. As Koguryo territory and governing system gradually became stabilized, Kwanmo was used as the symbol of governing and subjection.
As China increased commercial and cultural exchanges with other nations, Koguryo government system was influenced by China. As for Kwanmo, not only its shape but also its material changed, which is related to changes in the governing system in late Koguryo. Koguryo bureaucrats wore black, purple, and blue Kwanmos, according to their rank. In addition, Kwanmo decorations such as gold, silver and feather also indicated social status. In conclusion, the Koguryo people developed Kwanmo in their own way while interacting with people in neighboring countries.
