Oh Jung-Hee, who made a debut in 1968, wrote novels actively in 70ies and 80ies when our modern history was filled with much upheaval politically and economically. Despite this fact, some critics have criticized the awareness of social reality was lacking in her works. This thesis is expected to pave the way for wiping out some negative evaluation that Oh Jung-Hee's works focused on only exploring the mentality of outsiders, turning away from actual social matters.
Based on 「Bank of fog」 「River of fire」 「Jacob's dream」 「Early dawn」, this thesis studies how the awareness of social phenomena was reflected in her works. The mentioned works were authored in the late 70ies, when adverse effects and negative aspects in the midst of industrialization were prevalent. Oh Jung-Hee exposed contradiction and negative aspects of industrializing society through human alienation and deprivation represented by neglected people such as the lower middle class, urban laborers, displaced people, women and ex-convicts.
The studied novels not only represent the desperate life of alienated people but show their will to overcome difficulties. 「Bank of fog」 and 「River of fire」 dealt with materialism and a life subjected to labor, along with a will to survive. 「Jacob's dream」 focused on the issue of division and unification, making use of displaced people. Also, through 「Early dawn」, she emphatically expressed humanities and reconciliation, showing the despair and suffering of socially alienated people.
Despite quantitative expansion, more diverse and profound discussions have yet to be made about Oh Jung Hee's works. The reflective approach to her works will be meaningful work for a new evaluation of her literature.
