Hong-jik Lee made his studies into two books Studies on the Ancient Culture of Korea and Studies on the Ancient Korean History. I aimed to investigate his understanding in the ancient Korean history by studying the latter book. Several outcome has been gained through the study. Firstly, started study of the ancient history with a paper using Nihon-Shogi, he is a thorough scholar who insist that the use of document sources is the basic of studying history. Secondly, he empathizes that perfect positive criticism on historical records should be a prerequisite for records-based study of ancient Korean history. Thirdly, he usually compares Korean cases to Chinese or Japanese cases as choosing comparative case study. Forthly, he understands the importance of linking ancient history to mythology, anthropology, archeology, art history, the science of religion and so on. Fifthly, he intends to clear up the interrelationship between the different parts of the ancient Korean history by studying those parts synthetically. Sixthly, he believes study of history must contribute to the development of human society and eventually enlighten the public.
To Hong-jik Lee, after all, studying history is a trial to overcome the limitation of records and to depict a extended historical view by adapting results of fields of various studies. His passive attitude toward the early ancient history, however, due to the restraint of the times, makes one feel the miss.
