This paper discusses accomplishments so far made in research on royal capital, capital city and local city in ancient Korea from the perspective of urban history. Section Ⅱ examines the process of urbanization in the royal capital and capital city of Goguryeo and Baekje. The discussion focuses more particularly on how the capital city of Goguryeo and Baekje acquired aspects of a bona fide capital city, when city walls were built around them during the 6th century. Section Ⅲ looks at the birth and development of the royal capital of Silla. In this section, I describe how the concentration of population and resources around Wolseong, the royal capital, which occurred early in the 6th century, led to the development of an urban area and how following Silla's unification of the Korean peninsula, the boundaries of the royal capital were narrowed, and the redefined capital was reorganized according to an urban plan. The phenomenon of urban sprawl which took place in the Later Period of Unified Silla, as a result of a large population influx into the royal capital, pushing the boundaries of the city further away from its center, is also discussed in this section. Finally, in the last and fourth section, I turn to Byeol-do, the special capital that existed both in Goguryeo and Baekje, and Sogyeong, the Minor capital, in Silla and compare these ancient local cities with royal capitals and capital cities.
