The understanding of the geography connected with the building of nation state. At the late 19th century, the Korean elite laid down the Korean peninsula as the area of the Korean nation. After the opening port at 1876, Koreans contented with imperialist powers not only material spheres but also spiritual areas such as culture and history. The Japan imperialist argued that the characteristic of the peninsula closely similar to the character or Korean nation. On the contrary, both the Korean nationalist historian like Park Eun-sik, Shin Chae-ho and the cultural historian such as Choi Nam-son criticized the characters of island of Japan. They emphasized the strong point of peninsula as the pathway both the Asian Continent and the Pacific.
The peninsula translated Bando in Chinese Character at the late 19th century in Japan and re-translated it to the Korea. Bando meant both half island and half continent. Based on the Orientalism, the Japanese elite criticized Korean nation as the half independent nation which was ruled by China. This argument depended on the theory of the Japanese aggression. They were often regard Korean peninsula as the image of the rabbit. However, Korean historians and journalists compared Korean peninsula to the image of the tiger. The image of rabbit associated with Korean's weakness but the image of tiger was related to the strength of Korea. After the Manchuria invasion at 1931, the geographical status of Korean peninsula was changed. The relationship between Japan and the colonized Korea changed into the relationship among China, Manchuria, Korea and Japan. Some Koreans imaged Korea as the sub-imperialism under the Japanese power in Asia. After the liberation of Korea in 1945, this thinking was not disappeared. The ambition to the advancing continent was based on the ultra-nationalists' insistence.
