This study is an attempt to identify differences in meaning and use of the English causal complex prepositions because of, by reason of, owing to, due to, and thanks to. In this respect, an analysis on the basis of domains of use (Sweetser 1990) has been done, but it showed that the English causal complex prepositions do not seem to be strictly domain specific. Hence, a scalar perspective on causal relation and subjectivity (Pander Maat and Sanders 2000) has been adopted in the present investigation: how the causal relations of the complex prepositions can be represented in terms of the degree to which subjectivity is involved in the construal of the causal relation. To this end, corpus analyses of five causal complex prepositions in terms of subjectivity were done: ⅰ) the analysis of relational interpretations (non-volitional, volitional, and epistemic) co-occurring with causal complex prepositions and ⅱ) the analysis of the contexts in which the complex prepositions occur according to the distance to speaker and speaking time. The corpus analyses displayed that the English causal complex prepositions under investigation can be put on the subjectivity level in increasing order starting with due to, thanks to, owing to, by reason of and because of. This study also describes how the subjectivity degree of the causal complex prepositions affects the textual preferences.
