The purpose of this dissertation is to observe, through Jephthah narrative of Judges, what evil practices of preaching are caused by humanistic interpretation or model interpretation which beautifies the characters in today's Korean churches, and what influence they exert on the providence of God's salvation history which should be continually embodied in the life of saints.
To this end, the total outline of the dissertation is explained as introduction in Chapter One. In Chapter Two I have reviewed the literary techniques used by the author of Judges through ironies appearing chiefly in the narrative of Judges or through hints and the like revealed in the descriptions of characters. Reviewing the whole flow of the book of Judges from the view-point of irony, the readers find it hard to understand some things there, one of which makes the readers wonder what the reason is for Israel to be able to destroy the enemy and enjoy the victory in the midst of dire circumstances in which they obviously could never win victory. I have realized that the technique of irony was used to make readers interested in knowing how in the world such a tremendous result was brought about. The author of Judges neither beautifies the characters nor tries to find their merits due to which God couldn't help using them. He doesn't try to find and present the causes or spiritual secrets that made them able to win the wars inevitably. On the contrary, by highlighting the characters' shortcomings or nonsensical aspects the writer of the Scripture makes the readers wonder how such a tremendous result came out of persons like that. And that's all.
Although the writer of the Scripture never beautifies the characters of Judges, often preachers of Korean churches do model interpretation of trying to find and apply some merits and demerits of the characters to themselves or the hearers while being interested in what aspects of the judges they are to learn from. Why are we going in the direction against the intention of the text although the writer of the Scripture doesn't beautify the characters? For this, in Chapter Three I present exemplary sermons on Jephthah narrative whose hermeneutic viewpoints are different from each other, and have reviewed what evil practices of preaching are caused by humanistic interpretation or model interpretation in today's Korean churches and what influence they exert on the providence of God's salvation history which should be continually embodied in the life of saints. In Chapter Four, as conclusion I raise the question of how Korean churches today will overcome the problem that their preachings come near being religious in contents but not biblical unless they are careful. This dissertation proposes that spirituality paradigm of preaching be changed so that the answers presented by preachers and those by the Scripture may not run against each other but can run in the same direction together. The book of Judges was never written to beautify the characters or to present some secrets of success or principles of application from them. The same goes for other historical books of the Bible which contain historical events of salvation. God is the God of history who keeps on carrying out the far-reaching history of salvation from creation to the return of Jesus even in the midst of men's transgressions and faults. I think that while interpreting the narratives of Judges we preach the most powerful sermon as we understand the providence of God's salvation history who worked in the days of judges, show God and his love instead of insisting on learning some positive essons or being challenged by finding out some reasons for secrets of victory in the war or defeats. I don't think that if Korean churches today are satisfied with the sermons that show God and his love, they will repeat the failures that took place during the days of judges. 177
