This study has reviewed the meaning and the history of confirmation ritual from the perspective of Roman Catholic Church, preparation process for confirmation ritual-content and goal of confirmation preparation course, teaching-learning method, the main venue of the teaching, the period and the intensity of the education, major programs and post programs- in details. Consequently, it reviewed the process and the order of the confirmation ritual, its formal and symbolic behaviors and the theological meaning of those behaviors. Finally, it summarized various characteristics, new tendencies and problems related to confirmation proxies.
I would like to summarize educational insights acquired from the confirmation proxies of Catholic Church among various facts revealed from the review process.
First, Catholic Church amended the confirmation ritual text so that the people who are participating in the ritual can understand the text more clearly and participate in it actively. It is very important to realize the importance of making the symbolic behaviors and the speech of the ritual easy to be understood and to help people to participate in it more actively in religious education.
Second, according to the confirmation ritual of Catholic Church, there is conspicuous relationship between the confirmation of Catholic Church and entrance process of Christianity. It is shown clearly in the behavior and speech of the confirmation ritual and the process itself. It is very important to show its historical meaning and the content included in the ritual through behaviors and speech in the education of the rituals.
Third, although there are many similar aspects between the confirmation ritual of Catholic Church and entrance ritual of Protestant, there are many differences in the meaning and the value of those two rituals in each church. However, they are same in that the church realizes its educational opportunities and necessities.
Fourth, the tradition of guardianship is new to the Christianity. The Catholic Church selects God Father and God Mother during the confirmation process, those who make confirmation -mostly youths- come to church with their God Father and God Mother and those God Parents help them spiritually even after the confirmation throughout their lives. Christianity needs to pay attention to the value and usefulness of the guardianship (god parents).
Finally, Catholic Church introduces various teaching-learning methods during the Confirmation Preparation Process to make them experience the religious faith in actual life and internalize it as a life style of the youths who finished Confirmation.
It gives many implications to Korean Churches that do not perceive the entrance as the opportunity to educate the people and do not provide educational courses for Entrance. Korean Churches should perceive the Entrance as the importance opportunity to educate the children and the youths and to succeed their religious faith to the next generation and try to utilize it actively.
