This study emphasizes the significance of semantic classes in constructing electronic dictionaries through the example of the Sejong semantic class system of nouns. To make the outmost use of the semantic class system, it is of outmost importance that a precise and formalized semantic class system, based on inherent linguistic features, is constructed.
First, the study will offer an introduction on the aim and background of the Sejong semantic class system of nouns and its build up. Secondly, the theory of object classes as well as the Sejong semantic class system of nouns, derived from this theory, its structure, and its actual construction process will be treated. Finally, through examples of this semantic class system being put to practical use in the construction of electronic dictionaries, the study will argue the usefulness of the Sejong semantic class system of nouns as a formalized system based on the inherent linguistic feature of syntagmatic relations between words.
