The nature of conflicts among Koguryo(高句麗), the Chinese and north tribes was to hold sway over Li od ng(遼東) peninsular, the gulf of Balhae(渤海) and the north part of Yellow Sea(黃海) in ancient time. The areas around the gulf of Li od ng became very important in point of military strategy as Koguryo was confronted with Su (隋) and T ng(唐) there. Therefore the maritime defense system of Koguryo played an important role in defending its territory from the invasion of enemy naval forces so as to protect the route of trade and diplomacy. And it had correlation with the capital defending system.
I have already published the results of my research on the importance of the areas of Li od ng in maritime strategy and defense system in Koguryo In July 2002, I ascertained the existence of the castles of Koguryo in some islands of the Zh ngsh n Islands(長山群島) through my own field investigation. And I heard of some more of them.
The Zh ngsh n Islands are included in Li od ng(遼東) peninsular and administratively belongs to Zh ngh i(長海) province. They consist of over one hundred and twelve islands and sunken rocks. The water is about 20 meters deep. There are passing points of circum-pan Yellow Sea route(環黃海沿近海航路) and the crossing sea route of north Yellow Sea in the Islands. The Islands, therefore, had a maritime strategic importance at that time.
There were some possibilities for Koguryo to make use of tile strategic utility of the Islands in 235, since when Koguryo had relations with W (吳), H uzh o(後趙) and D ngj n(東晋) until the fourth century. In 404, the Islands got completely belonged to Koguryo under the reign of Kwanggaetodaewang(廣開土大王). It has been inferred that he established the maritime defense system on the Islands, in that he adopted the omnidirectional attack as the national strategy of his kingdom and entirely performed the naval forces operations. And the maritime defense system on the Islands must play an important role in the wars between Koguryo and Su (隋) and T ng(唐) The Islands would be suitable for the naval base of Koguryo when T ng(唐) attacked Ansi castle(安市城). I ascertained the existence of the castles of Koguryo in some islands of the Zh ngsh n Islands(長山群島) through my own field investigation. I have confirmed some castles known as castles of Koguryo to be exist in the Zh ngsh n Islands and other islands by field investigation and research of documents.
